About Toto
Toto was formed in the year 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also famous studio musicians working with Boz Scaggs) and singer/bassist Bobby Kimball. The group's name was derived from the Latin word that translates to "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore every style of music.
In 1981, Toto's third album Turn Back is a failure However, they resurface with their fourth release Isolation which contains two hits including the title track and Roseanna. The album and their tour made them a household brand all over the world.
After a short hiatus, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. It's a change from the ballads that were featured on previous albums and also includes some heavy rock. The album was their first to go platinum in North America.
In the course of recording the fifth album the group loses their manager and is faced with financial problems. They decide to record a brand new album and change their name to an entirely different producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, takes over Fergie Frederiksen as lead singer. Joseph is an easier frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a needed boost.
The band releases Mindfields in 1999, and then embarks on a huge tour around the world. After a few months in Europe they come to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a short break, Toto resumes recording and continues to record their first live album, Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes an original cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe in response to the band performing their hit song Africa on their recent tour. Toto's touring group includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest, as well as keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.
